A Day of Painting Koi in Oils

A Day of Painting Koi in Oils

Last week, I spent a whole day with my friend Rosie, teaching her how to paint with oils using ‘Alla Prima’ (wet in wet) technique. She picked out a photo on her cell phone that was taken in Hawaii over the holidays. After emailing the image to me, I opened it up on my computer to use as reference for her very first oil painting.

We went over a compressed lesson on color mixing (using a limited palette) and composition before sketching the Koi on our canvases with thinned oil mix of blue and red. Next step was to ‘block in’ getting a thin layer of paint over the entire canvas.  I painted along side her and was thrilled to see her excitement as we progressed.

She didn’t even want to stop for lunch! Tim did talk her into eating supper (that he cooked) with us and then it was back to our easels. When the paint was applied thicker in the final stage the fish started popping out from the background. Finally at 8:30 that evening we called it quits.

Just for fun, I added my interpretation of rings on the water surface which reminded me of looking through bullseye glass.
